Greenfield Village (The Henry)

An hour or so spent at The Henry (Greenfield Village) in Dearborn, MI always provides a few interesting shots. Yesterday was no exception. Here is a shot of an old country home from the south and the pickup point for a ride in one of Ford’s early cars.

A Fun Shoot – Rappers in a very dark room

I enjoyed photographing 3 rappers (Chris, Quentin, and Jamaal) in a very dark space. I used 2 strobes (Canon), one with an umbrella and one with a grid. Here are some of the best shots of the day.

Old Redford neighborhood art

Like most big cities, Detroit has a number of unique and distinct neighborhoods. One of them is Old Redford in northwest Detroit.

With the help of many of the residence and folks like John George of Motor City Blight Buster, this old neighborhood is gaining a fresh look. That fresh look can be seen in some of the wall art on building walls. Here is some of it.

A cornerstone of the area is the Artist Village and the new Motor City Java House.

Urban Gardens

The urban garden can turn a vacant lot into the source of wonderful fresh vegetables. In addition the labor that is used is great for the body of the gardeners. Here is an example of such a plot in the early spring, before planting has taken place.

Pre Easter Ride

This Saturday was a beautiful day – sunny, warm, spring like. My wife and I thought that a short trip (high gas prices) was in order. We decided to travel from the southern border of Oakland County, MI to the northwest corner and visit the cute little town of Holly, Michigan. This sleepy little town is filled with antique shop. Here are some of the interesting things that we saw.

This is a really BIG bear. I was told that it was a Russian Brown Bear.

This comic character was not impressed by the big bear.

She refused to even look at the bear.

The next part of the short trip took us south to the village of Milford (and lunch). This Easter greeting just happened to be in a window flower box.

This was an interesting piece of painted ceramic.

And it is not everyday that you see a chopper theme on a whirly gig.

Corktown in Detroit is the oldest neighborhood and dates to 1834. Many of the homes have been restored and are gems. The type of construction is varied as you can see from these examples.

The campus of Wayne State is in the heart of Detroit, just north of the downtown area. Like many urban universities, the landscape is a mix of old and new. Old building used for student housing and more modern works of art.

The idyllic farm life of rural America can be seen in some of these shots taken at Greenfield Village.

Horse power meant real horses seen in this beautiful farm scene.

The owner of the general of sore dressed for a day of business.

This type of covered porch was common in both homes and commercial buildings.

This two room house provided shelter to 2 adults and 5 children. The addition on the left provided a separate kitchen.

The two end of summer festivals in the Detroit area are the Jazz Festival in Detroit and Arts, Eats, and Beats in Royal Oak, MI (many years in Pontiac, MI.). On Friday afternoon I was able to spent a few hours looking and listening. I captured shots of performers at 6 different venues and here they are.

Another visit to the Heidelberg Project

Every two years the Heidelberg Project holds a party and showing for the community. This year featured all of the works along with music, food, crowds, and more. Despite the threat of rain, people stopped to look at and marvel. The advent of the digital camera gave almost everyone the chance to capture shots of both the art work and the people. I saw camera phones, point and shoots, and high level DSLR’s being used to shoot anything and everything. Here are some of what I captured.

Summer fun might mean going to the carnival. The Farris Wheel and the Merry-go-round are icons the we all expect to see and maybe ride on.

Another summer activity for young people is a visit to the Skate Board Park. This one is in Farmington Hills, MI.

Berkley Art Fair (MI not CA)

The summer art fair provides entertainment for the attendees and income for the vendors. The range of art and fun is almost endless. An example of the art might include items such as this:

Jewelry and other adornments provide for a behind the scenes look.

I am not clear what this vendor was selling.

Entertainment came as the seasoned musician, the amateur, and was enjoyed by the crowed.

Art Show in Dearborn

June 4th and 5th were the dates for the Open Competition at the Alfred Berkowitz Gallery at the the University of Michigan - Dearborn. The art work covered painting, photography, sculpture, and glass. My friend L. Zdeb is pictured with one of his pieces. The campus also had several interesting additions.

Holy Toledo or just plain Toledo, OH

I do not think that the phrase 'Holy Toledo' refers to our neighbor to the south of Detroit. My wife and I visited the TMA (Toledo Museum of Art) over this past weekend. The TMA is a world class museum with both 'old' and modern art pieces. We did enjoy our visit.

Toledo's downtown is neat and clean, but even with many renovated buildings, plenty of parking, and a great river front, where are the people?

Old Kmart Headquarters

The old Kmart headquarters in Troy, MI will probably be torn down and replaced with another structure. The building which looks a bit like a fort was built in 1972 and occupied until 2006. Here are several shots taken on April 20, 2010. They include a self portrait, several green grass shots, a empty entrance lobby, and a sun lite 'tower' shot.

A trip to the Henry Ford (Museum)

With the sun out and the temperature around 60 F, I found it hard to stay indoors.

This would be a great day to shoot some photos at Greenfield Village in Dearborn, MI. Upon getting to the gate, a large clear sign told me that April 15th would be the opening date. With the Museum next door, I decided to shoot indoors instead.

Michigan Snow

The gray quality of a snow day might lead one to not take photos. If you look at any snow scene, you will find a little color.

The red of the bark and the green of the needles give some relief the the monotones.

Even with 4 wheel drive, this might not be a good road to take.

The yellow of the light pole give some hint of brighter more colorful days.

Greenmead Historical Park

The Greenmead Historical Park in Livonia Michigan is the site that I used to test me new Tamron 18-50 2.8 lens. It was late in the afternoon and the sky was filed with heavy clouds. The snow with the gray clouds and the white buildings gave an monotone look.

The flag gave a bit of color.

This is the kind of school many young students in Michigan would have attended in the early part of the 20th century.

Many homes of this era were sturdy and simple.

A prosperous farm often had a house to match the wealth of the farm family.

Old railroad engines

Railroad engines from the steam era often had many brass parts and fittings. These photos are from the rail collection at the Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI. The beauty of brass is the lovely look and finish. All that is needed is a little 'brasso' and a soft cloth to keep the look fresh and new looking.

Early Aviation

The Henry Ford Museum in Dearborn, MI has a real DC-3 aircraft used by Northwest Airlines. Nealy 500 of this model were produced for commercial use more then 10,000 were produced for the military use in WWII. This plane is easily the most recognizable aircraft in the world.

My wife and I spent a quick hour and a half on Saturday enjoying this and many other treasures.

Hire a model to pose and of course she or he will have to move. It is difficult to hold a pose still for long periods of time. This store window gave the perfect place to use the dummy model. The dummy model of course never moves.

Christmas shopping can be trying or if you bring a camera, fun. While my wife and I spent several hours walking (and some shopping), we visited several interesting and visually stimulating shops. One of the shops had quit a collection of eastern ‘art’. Here are a few of the featured pieces.

Gray early morning shooting

So what if the weather is cold and the sky is gray. Look for color and reflections to fill the frame. I love to do self portraits. Here is one example.

The sun was up a few minutes ago, but clouds have almost covered it. The sky was framed in the window.

Details of the building material and exterior objects provide a nice contrast.

Thanksgiving Game Watching

Thanksgiving day is the time to eat and watch your favorite team on the tube.

Here is another Canon 7D high iso (4000) shot taken in a very dim room with one incandescent overhead and a TV screen as the only light in the room. The shot was at 4.5, 1/8, 4000 and post processing was Lightroom 2.5. The shot is a little soft, but in this light my eyes tend to be a little soft also.

Sunny fall days

The weather man has given us several great sunny days in a row. A trip down Grand River Ave. gave me several interesting shooting venues. The first is a bright red deserted gas station.

Broken windows, shovel, and art work by taggers.

High ISO and the 7D

I believe that the reality of shooting in any light condition is almost here. The following shot was taken in a parking lot before sunrise. The shot was at iso 3200, 21mm, F4.0, and 1/15 sec. I did use Lightroom to reduce the noise and increase contrast. I like the combination of backlite and strong side lighting, with the black sky.

The lens was a Sigma 18-200. Enjoy.

Fall - Colors

The colors of fall are often best shown when the sky is clear and blue. Some of the best light is midday and looking to the north or with the sun to ones back. Here are some examples of trees in a cemetery.

Reds, oranges, browns are the common colors and best seen when the leaves still cover the tree.

Canon 7D used with Lightroom used for processing. All colors were enhanced.

Detroit Free Press/Flagstar Marathon

On Sunday, October 18, 2009 Detroit marathoners ran through 'Red Dawn' movie set.

Just a few blocks from the race course, the streets were ghost like.

Included as a race event was a 5K run.

Even wheeled carts were seen.

Men and women, young and old, all runners appeared to enjoy the challange.

Halloween is almost here

Many cities (merchants) use this fall season to decorate the streets with Halloween themes. The city of Plymouth, MI has done this by having the businesses create a figure that is a straw filled costume and an appropriate face. Here are some of those creations:

The swing out bottom compartment (for camera and lenses) it too awkward to use and I will not be putting a camera in this bag.

Jazz Fest Workers

The Detroit Jazz Festival is the place to hear the best in both old and new jazz music. Most of the attendees enjoy the music, but also feast on the food, the people and the fair like atmosphere. The workers in the food and other booths are pleasant and friendly. Here are a few shots taken on Saturday night.

Detroit Jazz Festival 2009

For 30 years the Detroit Jazz Fest has featured both the best of national and local talent. If you have attended many times, you will seen some of the same smiling (or not smiling, jazz is serious) faces year after year. In addition to the music, people watching will please everyone.

On my July trip to visit family on the east cost, my niece took me on a quick walking tip to the Mall and White House. We caught the train in to downtown and arrived at 7:00 am. We turned toward the Capitol building and then turned around and headed to the Washington Memorial.
